"Tang Dynastic Flower Design" explains: Tang Cao Ripple, one of the decorative patterns. It is commonly known as the scrolling grass pattern in Japan and Korea. In China, it is commonly known as the "Fanlian" or "Western Fanlian" pattern. The first known examples of this motif are from Syria in the Near East, depicting a vine that grew commonly in Central Asia. It is a graceful and feminine design with curling branches and small flowers on stems. In the seventh century, the rise of the Muslim religion, it spread across Asia, Europe, and Africa. It became one of the most important decorative motifs in the monasteries of the Muslims. It was later combined with the Indian lotus motif in North India to form a two-sided or four-sided continuous pattern. This is known in Western art history as the Indian lotus.

During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, this type of lotus scrolling decoration was introduced to China with the Buddhist teachings via the Southern and Northern Silk Roads and the sea route. As it came from a foreign country, it was known as the Lotus pattern. Later, it was fused with the four seasonal flowers inherent in China and flourished in the Tang dynasty. After the Japanese came to China in the Tang dynasty and returned to the East, the pattern was adopted from the Tang dynasty and was therefore called the Tang grass pattern. The original name of the plant is Passigora Caerulea, an evergreen twining plant with deeply lobed palm-like leaves. It flowers in summer, with whorls of petals and rotating pistils, hence its name.
